The answer is:  when you get stopped by the police at 2:30AM on your way home from work...

...the details...After a nightmarish work shift I was driving crosstown on 65th, turned on 2nd Avenue and was heading to the 59th Street Bridge.  Some Neanderthal driving a big banged up white van pulled out from a parking spot right in front of me, I "zigged" out of his way and then "zagged" back into the lane.  A police car saw my snazzy driving in my very cool sporty Mini Cooper and stopped me...needless to say, he didn't see the white van that pulled out and cut me off that caused my spiffy motoring skills.  After presenting my driver's license which came up clean, I was sent off with "drive safe" and was soon back on my merry way.  I had asked why I was stopped and as I thought, it was due to my "maneuvering" earlier.

Moral of the story...defensive driving gets you stopped by the police...
